Why is the ending of Breaking Bad so sad? ›

Alas, Breaking Bad's series finale is far from happy-go-lucky. Not only does Bryan Cranston's character die at the final hurdle, but he dies lonely. All attempts at reconciliation with Skyler and Walt Jr. fall on deaf ears, leaving Heisenberg isolated from the very people he loved most.

We talked about every permutation we could conceive of, and we went the way we went ultimately because the bloodlust had been satiated prior to that moment by seeing Jesse throttle Todd (Jesse Plemons) to death. That's what the writers wanted to see.

When her life fell apart and Walt disappeared, Skyler lost her assets and moved in with her kids in a small apartment with a job as a taxi dispatcher. It was revealed that her sister, Marie, reached out for a truce, so it's likely that the two reconnected shortly after the series finale.

In the final scenes, Jesse refuses to kill Walter when handed a gun, and being fully aware that Walt was responsible for Jane's death, he parts ways with him; forgiveness is ambiguous.

The finale did give Jesse a happy ending of sorts when Walt, finally showing something like remorse for what he'd done to his former student, set him free. But our final image of Jesse was behind the wheel, screaming, gunning it down backroads to make his escape. It's an ending, but it's hardly closure.

Most of the thrilling action occurred in Ozymandias, and Felina was mostly concerned with concluding the story in as predictable and safe a manner as possible. Nothing really happened that we didn't expect, and it was a little disappointing.

One of the other incredible facets of Breaking Bad was that it gave you a choice. There are multiple alternative endings that you can ascribe to if you so choose, and the best of these features is one of, if not the best, reference in TV history.

5. Walt decides to save Jesse!

It's not until Walt looks his former student in the eye and sees him beaten, broken, and in chains that he realizes this isn't what he wanted for him. Even Gilligan himself admits that until that very moment, Walt was going to kill Jesse along with the rest of them.

The final scene in the show showed Mr. White exploring the lab at the compound. He was badly injured from his gunshot wound, and he spent his precious final moments surrounded by all the machines and devices used to cook meth. It's where Walter always felt his best, and it's where he died.

While there are plenty of tragic moments throughout Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, none are more tragic than Hank's death in Breaking Bad season 14, episode 5, "Ozymandias." Hank's relationship with Walt was tumultuous throughout the show's run, which is what makes Walt's reaction to Hank's death so impactful.

Jesse just wanted to enjoy his life in his own way. So Walt nodding to him and saying nothing at the end was also a way of showing Jesse he had changed. Just as he finally admitted to Skylar why he cooked. He wasn't suddenly a good man, but he rescued Jesse and tied up some loose ends for what he had started.

The episode, season, and series ends with Gene Takavic getting caught by the authorities and, under his legal name of Saul Goodman, getting sentenced to prison for the crimes he committed in Breaking Bad.
